ALBANY - Daniel Onufrak, 83, died peacefully on Thursday, December 21, 2023 surrounded by his family after a short stay at Shaker Place Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Born in Jermyn, PA on May 11, 1940 and raised in Simpson PA, he was the son of the late Andrew Onufrak and Rose Mikulak Onufrak. He was married to his beloved wife, Marion Burns Onufrak, formerly of Simpson, PA for 60 years.
Dan was the father of Elizabeth (Beth) Onufrak and Mark Onufrak, grandfather of Nicholas and Matthew Onufrak, and father-in-law of Jean Onufrak and Ron Mehin. He was predeceased by his sister Lillian Onufrak Pagnucco and brother Nicholas Onufrak.
Dan attended Fell Township High School in Simpson, PA. He served in the US National Guard in the 1960’s. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and pursued additional study in Astrophysics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. At Union University, Dan earned a Masters degree in Computer Science which became his lifelong career. He was employed for ten years by General Electric in Schenectady as one of the pioneer mainframe computer programmers. Dan formed his own computer consulting firm, General Software Company, Inc. in 1979. He was a long time member of Data Processing Management Association (DPMA) (now AITP) and also served as its president.
Dan and Marion traveled widely in Europe, Canada and the United States. But their favorite destination was Pemaquid Point, Maine. Dan loved his family first and foremost. He was known for his kind and helpful nature, love of music, passion for space science, keen photographic eye, endless patience, legendary love of food, wonderful singing voice, and ability to fix anything and invent solutions for any need.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Dan’s family on Tuesday, December 26, 2023 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Hans Funeral Home, 1088 Western Ave., Albany NY 12203 . All are invited to attend his Funeral Mass on Wednesday, December 27th at 9:00 a.m. in All Saints Catholic Church, 16 Homestead St., Albany NY 12203 (behind CVS). Interment will be held at a later date in Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Carbondale, PA.
Dan was a communicant of All Saints Catholic Church since 1969, where he once served as choir member.
