Donald L. Groat

GUILDERLAND – Donald L. Groat, 90, of Guilderland, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, July 18, 2023.  Don was born in Stockport, and during his life lived in Albany, West Albany, and Guilderland.  He served in the National Guard for two years and was employed for many years by the former Albany Felt Company in Menands, and also by Cummins Diesel in Albany.  He was a communicant of St. Madeleine Sophie Church in Guilderland, and had been a member of the West Albany Fire Department where he enjoyed playing in their softball league.  He also enjoyed fishing.  Don’s greatest treasure was the family that he created with his wife, and the time he spent with them.

Don is survived by his beloved wife Phyllis Rose Indilicato Groat; his children Margaret Fiacco (the late Robert) of Altamont, Mary Miller (Stuart) of Clifton Park, Anthony W. Groat (Karen) of Guilderland, Donna Miller (Michael) of Edinburg, Lori Roberts (Steven) of Loudonville, and Paula Brennan (Timothy) of Menands; his grandchildren Donald Fiacco, Brian Miller (Eva), Jennifer Allison (Robert), Melissa Groat, Lisa Tastor (Jamie), Christine Groat, Ryan Miller, Drew Miller, Daniel Miller, Joseph Casey, Matthew Casey (Amanda), Eric Casey, and Tyler Brennan; his brother Alan Hall (Carol Ann) of Bath; and by eleven great grandchildren.  He was predeceased by his siblings and their spouses Irving Groat (Martha), Robert Groat (Anna), Warren Groat (Nancy), Marguerite Macher (Felix), Shirley Fritsch (Calvin), and Eleanor Vaught (Carl).

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. in St. Madeleine Sophie Church, 3500 Carman Rd, in Guilderland.  Relatives and friends are invited.  There will be no calling hours.  Interment will follow the mass in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna.  The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Madeleine Sophie Church, 3500 Carman Rd., Schenectady, NY 12303.  Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hans Funeral Home, Albany.  To leave a message of condolence for the family, please visit www.HansFuneralHome.com.
