NISKAYUNA - Dr. Fredrik Arthur Muller, aged 89, passed away on Sunday, September 22, 2024, in Albany, New York. Born on December 15, 1934 in Fevik, Norway, Fred led a life marked by continual learning, dedication, and kindness.
Fred's educational journey began at Saratoga Springs High School and continued at Union College where he earned a Bachelor of Science. He furthered his studies at Princeton University, obtaining both a Master's of Science and a PhD in Chemistry.
Fred's professional career was diverse and impactful. He started at General Electric Corp. in their Knolls Research and Development Laboratory, later transitioning to academia as an Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia, where he also operated a flight school. In the1970s, he joined the family business, Spa City Cycle Center, as vice president before moving onto roles as a researcher for the New York State Department of Health and a software consultant for Digital Equipment Corporation. Even into his early 80s, Fred enjoyed driving a school bus for the Niskayuna School District.
Fred served in the U.S. Naval Reserves, demonstrating his commitment to his country alongside his professional and academic pursuits. His hobbies were as varied as his career, encompassing a lifelong passion for reading, especially historical documentaries and novels. An avid aviator, Fred held several flight certifications, taught flying, and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. His interests also included photography, tinkering with computers, target shooting,and building radio-controlled model airplanes. Fred found joy in boating, RV trips to the Adirondacks, summers at Brant Lake, NY, and relaxing by a fire on his patio with loved ones.
Fred was preceded in death by his first wife, Eleanor (Crosthwait); son, Walter; daughter, Ruth Rebecca DeLude; parents, George and Esther (Trulsen); and brothers, Peter, George, David,and Daniel. He is survived by his wife, Mary (Mohns); dog, Angel, and cat, Olaf. Son, John (wife Cristina); grandchildren Jamie Muller, Jessica (husband Michael) Farley, Mark (wife MacKenzie) DeLude, Rebecca (husband Jeremy) Morris, Julia Muller, Ana McCasland, Patricia McCasland; great grandchildren Xaiver DeLude, Oliver Morris, Killian Morris, Avery Morris, Ryan McPherson, Anthony VanBramer Jr., Tyler Farley, Nicholas Farley, Kyndra Farley, Christopher Baker, Tessa Baker, Brittany Farley, Michael Farley Jr., and Everly Farley; and siblings Elizabeth, Robert, Leonard, Glenn, and John.
