ALBANY – Elizabeth J. Mahar Caporta passed away peacefully at the age of 101 on Monday, June 17, 2024, at the Teresian House in Albany. Betty, as she was known, was born on September 12, 1922 in Albany and grew up in North Albany and the Pine Hills neighborhood. She was the daughter of the late James T. and Elizabeth Hogan Mahar.
Betty was a graduate of Vincentian Institute (Class of 1940) and Mildred Elley Business School. She began her working career at the Voorheesville Depot during the war years. After years at home with her children, she returned to the business world, working at the University at Albany in the Student Health Center and later in the Personnel Department where she retired from in 1983.
In 1949, she married John J. Caporta who had returned from submarine duty in the Navy during World War II. They moved to McKownville in Guilderland where they raised their family and enjoyed lifelong friendships with neighbors. Betty loved her home and community. She was a devout Catholic and a member of All Saints Catholic Church (formerly St. Margaret Mary’s). Family was the center of her life. Having her children and extended family close by to visit and share meals filled her with great happiness. Betty loved reading (especially books about the Depression years, World War II, and her Irish heritage), a good cup of tea at noon each day, and almost any dessert with a scoop of ice cream.
Betty was predeceased by her loving husband John J. Caporta, Sr. in 2017; her brother James Mahar, and her sister Claire Mahar Raymond. She is survived by her brother Thomas Mahar of Wethersfield, CT; her much loved children Catherine Mary Beadnell of Voorheesville, Joanne Danaher (John) of Delmar, and John J. Caporta, Jr. (Mary Ellen) of Glenmont; her grandchildren Michael Beadnell (Sasha), Timothy Beadnell (Jaclyn), Katie Caporta, Julie Caporta, Moira Danaher, and Jim Danaher; her great grandchildren Peyton, Danica, Jackson, and Luke Beadnell. She is also survived by nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday morning, June 21st, 10:30 am in All Saints Catholic Church, 16 Homestead St., Albany (the former St. Margaret Mary’s). Relatives and friends are invited. There will be no calling hours. Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to All Saints Catholic Church, mailed to 12 Rosemont St., Albany, NY 12203; or to the Capital City Rescue Mission, 259 S Pearl St, Albany, NY 12202.
