ALBANY - George E. Martin, PhD., born July 3, 1932 in Batavia, NY to William and Annabelle Martin, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2024. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Margaret Stewart, PhD., and his companion Ann Githler. George attended secondary schools in Batavia, did his undergraduate work at the New York State College for Teachers at Albany, and received his Master’s Degree and PhD. at the University of Michigan. He served in the U.S. Army at the Ballistics Research Laboratory at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland . While a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Albany, SUNY for over 35 years, George authored five textbooks on Math and was famous for his annual Holiday Puzzles. He traveled widely throughout his adult life, first with his wife Margaret (herself a Professor of Biology and a world-renowned expert on amphibians and reptiles), and then with his partner Ann Githler, chasing solar eclipses and making regular pilgrimages to operas in all corners of the globe. He will be remembered fondly by the many students and friends whose lives he touched.
