Helen M. Casey

ALBANY – Helen M. Casey, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2017, after a brief illness.  Helen was born and raised in Watervliet, New York, the daughter of the late William A. and Catherine Mahar McDermott.  She graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1945 and attended The College of St. Rose.  Helen worked for the New York Telephone Company, partnered with her nieces running At Your Service, hosting NYC bus trips to theater and dinners, NYS Department of Tax and Finance and Albany Medical Center.

She spent fifty-four happy years with her devoted husband, Paul R. Casey, raising their three children in Albany and Slingerlands, NY.  Helen and Paul fulfilled their dream of retiring on Cape Cod in 1993.  While residing in Dennis, Helen enjoyed being a member of the Dennis Garden Club, the Walking Club, the Ladies Guild and Our Lady of the Cape Catholic Church.  She loved hosting many gatherings of family and friends, going to the beach and especially spending time with her grandsons.  When in Albany, Helen was a communicant of the Parish of Mater Christi.

An avid sports fan, she thoroughly enjoyed cheering on her favorite teams, the Red Sox and Patriots, but was especially fond of attending her grandsons’ sporting events.

Helen is survived by her children James (Karen) Casey, Susan Casey, Carol (Joseph) Cahill; her grandchildren, Matthew and Kevin Cahill; many nieces and nephews; and her sister in law Jean Casey Harrison.  She was predeceased by her loving husband Paul and her dear sisters, Margaret Dyer, Alice Pinckney, and her brothers William, Frank and Bertram McDermott.

Funeral services will be held in the Hans Funeral Home, 1088 Western Ave., Albany, Monday morning at 11:30 a.m., and from there to the Parish of Mater Christi, Hurst Ave. & Hopewell St., Albany at 12:30 p.m.  Relatives and friends are invited, and may call at the funeral home Monday morning from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.  Interment will be at a later date in Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Helen’s memory to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 733 3rd Ave, New York, NY  10017.  To leave a message of condolence for the family or obtain directions to the funeral home, please visit www.HansFuneralHome.com.
