LATHAM – Irene M. Burnell, 83, died Tuesday, July 27,2021 at home surrounded by her loving family. Irene was born in Albany, NY, the daughter of the late William M. Powell and Mildred Chappel Powell, and sister of the late Harold E. Powell. She was a graduate of the former Philip Schuyler High School and then became a Licensed Practical Nurse, specializing in geriatrics. Irene had a love for writing and was a gifted poet who was published anonymously over the years.
Irene was the beloved wife of Bernard Burnell of Latham, loving and devoted mother to Elizabeth (Lisa), of Acra, Scott Williams of Rensselaer, and Susan Eberth (Charles) of Toronto. Loving and proud Nana to her cherished grandchildren April Jasiewicz-Byerwalters, Joseph Riviello, Amanda (preceded in death) and Christopher Williams, Shane, Savannah and Chaz Eberth, Merissa, Stephanie, Scotty, Dallas, Samantha and Shannon Williams, and Dylan Licata. Special grandson Austin James Burnell and great grandsons Steven and Dennis, Aiden, Francisco, Ethan, Sebastian, Joseph and great granddaughters Carleigh, Madison, Leah, Avery and Bayleigh. Stepmother of James (Ruth) Burnell and Tina (Chuck) Eaton.
As she wished there will be a celebration of life at Hans Funeral Home, Saturday July 31st from 2 – 4pm, with a service to follow at 4pm. As anyone who knew her knows her greatest joy in life were her children and grandchildren, and she will live on through them, her husband, family and friends.
In lieu of flowers please make a gift to one of her favorite charities; Hudson Mohawk Humane Society, St. Judes Childrens Hospital, Albany Medical Center Childrens Hospital, Kidney Foundation of New York, Association of the Blind, Capital District Rescue Mission c/o Perry Jones, Albany, NY and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
