GANSEVOORT - John Courtney Hammond passed away on March 8th, 2025 at the age of 94 after a long struggle with dementia. John (Jack) was born at home on January 30th, 1931 to Nellie (Wells) Hammond and Courtney Hammond in Ticonderoga, NY. Jack graduated from Ticonderoga High School and was employed at International Paper. He married Joan Wendall and soon had their three children - Barbara Jane, Thomas Courtney, and Mary Jo. He was widowed and married Joyce Ann Perkins on July 5th, 1958. Jack and Joyce had three children - Carrie Ann, Yvonne Colleen, and John Charles.
During their early years, Jack joined the National Guard and trained at Fort Drum. He shared many of the antics of his twenty two years of service. He moved the family to Gansevoort, NY and was employed at Sandy Hill, then worked as a draftsman for Kamyr, Inc. until he retired. Jack volunteered his time to the Community Center in South Glens Falls, NY as well as Caritas where he offered respite to those families in need. After retirement he worked part-time at Moreau State Park and Advance Auto Parts. He enjoyed many years of fly-fishing, deer hunting, and bird hunting. Other hobbies included watercolor painting, sketching, woodcarving, and mushroom hunting. He was most at home in nature. Jack made friends with everyone who met him, and he was always a harmless flirt to women, young and old. He was a beloved member of Saint Therese Chapel in Gansevoort, NY. His wife Joyce predeceased him on January 28th, 2025 after 67 years of marriage. His sisters Mary and Sylvia and daughter Mary Jo also predeceased him. He leaves behind his children Barbara and Dan Naylor, Thomas and Kathryn Hammond, Carrie and Michael Conrad, Yvonne Hammond and her partner John Merrow, John Hammond and his partner Karen Phillips, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.The family suggests contributions in his memory may be made to Moreau Emergency Squad, 1583 Rt. 9, Moreau, NY 12828.
