John J. Brophy

VOORHEESVILLE  – John J. Brophy, 85, of Voorheesville, died Saturday, February 19, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Lutheran Health Care Center in Delmar.  Mr. Brophy was born in Oneonta, and lived in Copiague, East Greenbush and Guilderland.  He was employed as a teacher at high schools in Amityville and Plainview before coming to Columbia High School in East Greenbush.  He then was employed by the New York State Education Department for twenty years, retiring as Supervisor of Business Education.  He also was a communicant of Christ the King Church in Guilderland.

Mr. Brophy was predeceased by his wife Mary Holmes Brophy, his wife Ellen Rochford Brophy, his son John R. Brophy, and his son in law John Quell.  He is survived by his children Mary Quell of Colonie, Regina Dunn (James) of Colonie, Thomas Brophy of Roswell, NM, and Daniel Brophy of Watervliet; his grandchildren Amber Dunn, and Shaun and Jennifer Quell; his brother Gerard Brophy (Patricia) of Troy; and by several nieces and nephews.  He was also predeceased by his sisters Margaret Brophy and Julia Cunningham; and his brothers James and William Brophy.

The Brophy family would like to thank the caring staff of the Good Samaritan Lutheran Health Care center for the wonderful care they provided to Mr. Brophy.

Funeral services will be held in the Hans Funeral Home, 1088 Western Ave., Albany, Tuesday morning at 9:00, and 10:00 in the Church of Christ the King, Sumter Ave., Guilderland.  Relatives and friends are invited, and may call at the funeral home Monday from 4-7 p.m.  The parish family of Christ the King Church will gather at 4:30 pm for a service of prayer and remembrance.  All are welcome.  Interment will be held privately at a later date.   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Christ the King Building Fund, 20 Sumpter Ave., Albany, NY 12203.  To leave a message of condolence for the family, send a sympathy card, or obtain directions to the funeral home, please visit www.HansFuneralHome.com.
