Karel M. J. Hoeberechts, age 90, passed away on August 14, 2024, in Albany, NY. He was born on September 1, 1933, in Rosendaal, Netherlands.
While in Holland, Karel served in the Royal Dutch Air Force. After his military service, he emigrated to the United States where he ventured into various professional fields. He worked as an insurance salesman, was involved in the tile and textile industries, and worked as a draftsman. He was also the proud owner and operator of Dutch Treat food truck in Newburgh, NY.
A devout Catholic, Karel was an active member of St. Thomas of Canterbury (Cornwall, NY), Oblates of Mary Immaculate (Newburgh, NY), St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church (Gardiner, NY), and St. Vincent de Paul (Cobleskill, NY). His faith in Jesus Christ as his personal Savior played a significant role throughout his life, guiding his actions and interactions with others.
He was one of the founders of the Chapel for the Unborn in Newburgh which was created to recognize and honor children who died before or at birth.
Karel lived a simple life and was known for his kind and humorous nature. In his earlier years, he enjoyed going camping with his family, skiing, playing tennis, and reading. Later in life, he enjoyed being with his family and sharing stories with his friends. In the Fall last year, he was privileged to join other veterans on a trip to Washington DC as part of the Leatherstocking Honor Flight.
He is survived by his son, Fr. Dwight C. Hoeberechts, OMI; daughter, Hetty C. Butler (Eric); grandchildren John (Sarah) Butler, Karen (AJ) Kappen; great-grandchildren Lucas, Hannah, Jonah, Philip; and his sister, Henriette Porsius in the Netherlands. Karel was preceded in death by his wife, Maria C. Hoeberechts, and his siblings, Arthur, Eugene, and Tony.
Karel made an anatomical gift of his body to Albany Medical College. This valuable program allows future medical students the ability to go beyond their book studies and have hands-on experience with a human body.
Memorial services will be announced at a later date. Hans Funeral Home in Albany, NY, is assisting with the arrangements. To leave a message of condolence for the family, please visit www.HansFuneralHome.com.
