SCOTIA – Marjorie Ellen “Midge” Johnson was called home to the loving arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, September 21, 2021.
Marjorie was born in Everett, MA on May 14, 1922 to H. Martin and Ruth Johnson, and lived most of her life in Scotia, NY. She was a graduate of Scotia High School and Trinity Bible College in Minneapolis, MN and worked in accounting at General Electric in Schenectady until she retired.
Marjorie was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Schenectady for 74 years and faithfully attended Sunday worship and Wednesday prayer services every week. She also generously gave her time and talents by volunteering for a variety of Christian ministries including Camp Pattersonville and Youth for Christ. She also visited homes for the elderly where she would play her trumpet to bring encouragement.
Marjorie was passionate about exercising with a group of women at “Curves” in Glenville until she was in her 90s and impressed many with her strength and endurance! She continued to meet for breakfast and birthday luncheons with “the Curves girls” even after they closed. She was gifted artistically and spent many hours painting, taking pictures, and playing three different instruments: the trumpet, the piano, and of course her beloved harmonica purchased at Kresge’s for 35 cents in 1935! She loved to vacation in Maine and was an avid traveler, visiting many foreign countries and nearly all 50 states.
In July 2018 Marjorie moved to Judson Meadows Assisted Living Community in Glenville, NY where she entertained many residents by playing the piano and harmonica.
Marjorie Johnson was preceded in death by her parents, H. Martin and Ruth Johnson, and her siblings: Eleanor (Johnson/Rydbeck) Petrie, Gordon Johnson and Marion (Johnson) Allaby.
Marjorie’s survivors include brothers-in-law Clyde Petrie of Aurora, CO and Stanley Reynolds Allaby of Woodstock Valley, CT, and sister-in-law Edith Johnson of Fort Myers, FL. “Aunt Midge” impacted the lives of her eleven nieces and nephews in profound ways and was deeply loved by them. Her many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews will not forget her amazing “Midgie Hugs”! She lived her entire life as a strong, compassionate, Christian woman and was a great example to all her family: teaching, loving, and sharing her wisdom and playfulness.
Marjorie donated her physical body to aid in the furthering of medical science and education.
A memorial service for Marjorie Johnson will take place at 11 AM on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at First Presbyterian Church, 209 Union Street, Schenectady, NY.
Memorial gifts may be made in Marjorie’s name to: City Mission of Schenectady, PO Box 760, Schenectady, NY 12301. To leave a message of condolence for Marjorie’s family, please visit HansFuneralHome.com .
