Virginia McCarthy

ALBANY – Mary Virginia “Ginny” McCarthy, 100, of Albany, passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at Shaker Place Nursing Center.  Ginny was born in Albany, the daughter of the late John Kiernan and Catherine Kelly Kiernan.  She lived in Albany all her life and was employed by the New York State Departments of Civil Service, Taxation & Finance, and Labor.  She volunteered extensively at Blessed Sacrament School, the LaSalle School in Albany, and for AARP.  Ginny was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church in Albany for many years and she loved to swim.  She swam at SUNY, the Ciccotti Center, the Y, the Jewish Community Center, and the Bethlehem Town Pool.

 Ginny was predeceased by her husband John J. McCarthy, her daughter Eileen M. “Cookie” Pierce, and her daughter-in-law Sharon McCarthy.  She is survived by her children John McCarthy of Indiana, Timothy McCarthy of Delmar, Mary Ellen Walsh (John) of Albany, and Cathryn Carey (Edward) of Delmar; her son-in-law Paul Pierce of East Greenbush; and by sixteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.   She was also predeceased by her sisters Edna Conboy, Catherine Brown, and Bernice Turnbull.

 Funeral services will be held in the Hans Funeral Home, 1088 Western Ave., Albany, Tuesday morning at 9:30 am, and from there to Blessed Sacrament Church, 607 Central Ave., Albany at 10:30 am.  Relatives and friends are invited, and may call at the funeral home Monday from 4-7 pm.   Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Living Resources.  To leave a message of condolence for the family or obtain directions to the funeral home, please visit www.HansFuneralHome.com.
